The investigation into a burning body found in a shopping cart near a bridge in Westchester has been turned over to authorities in a neighboring jurisdiction after it was determined the victim was killed elsewhere, police announced.

The body was found near the Oak Street bridge by the Yonkers and Mount Vernon border, police said.

The body was found on Monday, Aug. 5 just before 2 a.m. on the southern sidewalk of the Oak Street bridge at the Yonkers and Mount Vernon border, according to Yonkers Police Detective Sergeant Frank DiDomizio.

The incident was first reported as a fire. However, when it was put out, authorities realized that a body on the sidewalk had been what was on fire.

Yonkers Police officers then responded and determined that the body had been put in a shopping cart before it was lit on fire, DiDomizio said.

Following an initial investigation at the scene, authorities officially deemed the incident a homicide. However, police also determined that while the body had been set on fire within Yonkers, the city was only a "dump site" and that the homicide should instead be investigated by the New York City Police Department.

Because of this, the NYPD and the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office have assumed the investigation, according to DiDomizio.

According to a report by NBC New York, a search warrant related to the incident was conducted at a Bronx residence on Rogers Place, where human remains were found in the kitchen as well as a firearm and drug paraphernalia.

Authorities also have video of a man rolling a shopping cart on a Metro-North train in the Bronx's 44th precinct, which appeared to be the same one lit on fire, the outlet reported.

More information, including the victim's identity, has not been released.
